Jerry Lee Carter, M.D., age 90, of Little Rock, Ark., went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 25, 2022. He was born July 14, 1932, in Jonesboro to Odessa Higginbotham Carter and LeRoy Carter. Jerry graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1954, where he was a member of Sigma Chi. It was there that he was nicknamed Moonman because he owned an Oldsmobile Rocket 88. Jerry began his career in Phillips County, Ark., where he owned a cotton gin and a chemical and seed company. At the age of 34, Jerry became ill with Guillian-Barr syndrome which left him completely paralyzed. During his illness, he promised God that if He would heal him, he would go to medical school so that he would be able to help as many people as possible. Jerry was healed and he kept his promise to God and continued to practice Family Medicine until he was 77 years old. Jerry was a member of Little Rock's First Baptist Church. He was an avid Razorback fan and coin collector. He loved to play duplicate bridge and travel. In his younger years, Jerry loved to play basketball, football, tennis, golf, water ski, snow ski and bowling. Jerry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Betty Swihart Carter; three children, Jerry Lee Carter, Jr. (Gerry), Teresa Murphy (Joe). all of Little Rock, and Brent Carter (Amy) of Heber Springs; three grandchildren, Patrick Murphy (McKenzie), Brittany Holt (Jayme), and Alex Layrock; five great-grandchildren, Sawyer Murphy, Sutton Murphy, Sullivan Murphy, Stella Holt, and Beau Holt. He is also survived by one brother, Bill Carter. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, in the Chapel of Little Rock's First Baptist Church. A visitation will begin at 3 p.m. A private family graveside service will be held at another time at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens and will be officiated by Mark Matthews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arkansas Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 2222, Little Rock, Ark. 72203 and or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
