James Herbert David Castleberry, Jr. departed this life peacefully May 28, 2022, at the McClellan Veterans Memorial Hospital in Little Rock. He was born July 13th, 1944, to James Herbert and Ova Lee Castleberry. He attended Lonoke High school until 1962. After school, he joined the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Polk, La.; from there, he went to Vietnam. The last part of his tour, he was stationed at, North Pole, Alaska. He was a welder by trade and was always known for his work ethic. He retired from AFCO steel after more than 36 years. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Dawn Castleberry; and his wife, Jackie May Castleberry. Also preceded by two brothers, Marvin Castleberry and J.C. Castleberry. He is survived by a daughter, Tammy Castleberry and grandson, Devin Toney, of Bryant; sister, Rita Miller of Lonoke; brothers, Kelly Castleberry of Old Ocean, Texas, and Carroll Castleberry of Malvern; and a host of nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Atkinson Funeral Home in Malvern at 12 noon June 4th, 2022. The service will follow at 1 p.m., and be delivered by Pastor Roy Willis. He will be honored by the military he served and placed to rest at Fairplay Cemetery. James, Jim, also known as "Dad," "Pawpaw," "Herbie," was a very kind and generous man. He was loved and will be missed by many. The family would like to express how grateful we are for the VA, the palliative care unit at the VA, hospice care, and his wonderful caregivers.
