PAPER TRAILS: New York collector one stamp closer

STAMP OF APPROVAL:

As a New York stockbroker working just off Wall Street, Henry Scheuer probably has a lot of stress in his life.

So how does he unwind? By collecting stamps.

The 59-year-old is especially interested in firstday covers and the rare 4-cent blue Project Mercury stamp.

His goal? To collect one postmarked from each of the 305 cities chosen for the firstday issue when John Glenn splashed down about 3:30 p.m., on Feb. 20, 1962.

Unlike most special issues, this was a surprise, occurring near the end of a workday just after Glenn splashed down.

Little Rock's main post office and five branches received 50,000 of the stamps.

"Most collectors fortunate enough to buy the stamps saved them in full, unused sheets of 50," says Scheuer.

"Many did not think to place them on letters to be mailed, postmarked and saved as souvenirs of this historic day."

But at least one Little Rock resident at the time, Rollie Remmel, was an exception.

(Why are we not surprised?) He mailed his to Mr. and Mrs. Pratt C. Remmel with a note inside reading "Hello there!

Here's a first day cover for you all. Love, Rollie."

Scheuer, who found Remmel's stamp via the Internet from the Coin and Stamp Shop in Little Rock, paid $41 for it. Of the 305 cities in which the stamp was issued, he has only 25 more to go. And can't you just hear the late Rollie Remmelcheering him on?

BROADCAST NEWS:

Doug Krile, in local TV news for years, is leaving the business. Krile, formerly a KARK-TV, Channel 4 anchorman and most recently director of news and public relations for Equity Broadcasting Corp., is leaving after last year's sale to Coconut Palm Acquisition Corp. of Boca Raton, Fla., led to a reduced emphasis on public relations and news.

Krile is joining Arkansas Children's Hospital, where he'll be a Team Leader with the IT department on a business development plan.

MORE MUSIC:

IDOL NO MORE:

Sean Michel of Bryant, who auditioned for TV's American Idol in Memphis and made it to Hollywood, has been cut.

He appeared briefly in last Tuesday's show.

"My mouth just went dry," said Michel on camera after a Hollywood performance (not aired) in which he failed to impress the judges.

It seems there's a Starbucks brewing on Broadway in downtown Little Rock. The chain at first resisted the idea of drive-throughs, but, since it discovered their profitability, smaller venues are springing up fast and furiously.
