A police officer shot a man who was trying to break into the officer's west Little Rock apartment Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Speaking at the scene, 420 Markham Mesa Place, Little Rock Police Department Lt. Michael Ford said the man who was shot is in serious condition at a nearby hospital.
Ford said the officer opened fire shortly before 10:30 a.m. as the intruder tried to force his way inside the residence, which is in Bowman Heights Apartments south of Mara Lynn Road and west of Interstate 430. The man at one point was banging on the officer's door, police said.
The man who was shot was said to be a black male in his 20s. It wasn't clear if the man was armed, Ford said. He declined to identify the officer but described him as a veteran of the force.
Ford said additional details weren't yet available.

"We're just out here about 30 minutes now, so it's still active and ongoing," he said.
An investigation is ongoing, and findings will be turned over to prosecutors once it is concluded, Ford said.
It marks the first officer-involved shooting of the year in Little Rock.

A Little Rock Police Department officer has been involved in a shooting Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Lt. Michael Ford said the shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. at 420 Markham Mesa Place, which is south of Mara Lynn Road and west of Interstate 430. Dispatch record show officers were called to that address 10:25 a.m. for a report of a burglary.
