Slender, 37-year-old Kevin Skinner of Mayfield, Ky., and Susan Boyle of Scotland have never met. But they shared a lot in common during 2009.

I see where the Stockholm County Administrative Board finally is taking a hard look at the purpose and intent of the Nobel Peace Prize.

All you bright high school students across our state, take heart, especially if you’re not athletes.

Anyone else feeling as good as I am about those 60 new jobs being added by Tyson Foods at its Mexican Original plant in Fayetteville? It’s high time we all got some encouraging news here in the state’s economic engine.

When I hear of couples married for 60 or 70 years, folks like the Sprotts of Marble; my aunt and uncle, Ken and Bobbie Masterson of South Haven; and Albert Ray and Illa Gene Wheeler of Searcy County, I realize it’s possible for people to meet, fall in love and remain loving companions across a lifetime.

I continue to admire and respect 20th Judicial District Prosecutor Cody Hiland. Hiland and his investigator Monty Vickers are trying cure the 22-year long infection to justice known across Arkansas as the Janie Ward case. Because the 16-year-old Miss Ward died in Hiland’s jurisdiction, and because this shameful case has been twice buried by the influential powers that be locally and in our state, Hiland’s decision reflects the kind of courage each of us desires and expects from our criminal-justice system.

Still relevant six decades later

My soft-spoken uncle Henry Masterson is a kindly, intelligent man who grew to become a Catholic priest, and later a beloved “Teacher of the Year” in El Paso’s public schools. Today, I’m sharing his prize-winning essay written for a local women’s club contest in 1953 when he was just 17. His words from 59 years ago remain just as relevant to me.
