Faulkner County fatal shooting investigated

A 40-year-old man was found fatally shot outside a Faulkner County residence near Lake Conway a short time after he had been reported cursing, drinking beer and hitting another home with a boat paddle, authorities said.

The Faulkner County sheriff's office said 40-year-old Charles Oakey was found dead on the front porch of 146 Waterfront Cove on Tuesday after deputies were called to the disturbance he was said to be involved in at a neighboring residence.

Chief Deputy Matt Rice said police believe one of the residents at 146 Waterfront Cove shot Oakey, though it remains under investigation. He said it's unclear yet if the fatal shooting was justified, noting the neighbors had indicated Oakey was "causing some type of ruckus."

"But we're not sure to what extent," Rice said. "There's a lot of things we've got to determine before we turn it over to the prosecutor."

Rice said Oakey also lived near Lake Conway on Caney Creek Road and that he may have been acquaintances with the residents at 146 Waterfront Cove.

Police identified the residents there as 47-year-old Brian N. Gay and 46-year-old Kaye L. Brown and said both were arrested on unrelated drug paraphernalia charges tied to evidence found during a search of the home.
