NAEP Scores

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) released a new report connecting vocabulary skills to reading comprehension. Fourth- and Eighth-grade students in Arkansas scored lower than the national average, according to the report. Since 1969, NAEP assessments have been conducted periodically in reading, mathematics, science, writing, U.S. history, civics, geography and other subjects. This is the first time NAEP has reported on students’ vocabulary knowledge.

Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell said it was impossible to draw any broad-brush conclusions about Arkansas’ results. The state’s Benchmark Exams include vocabulary, but scoring specifically for vocabulary is not done.
