Greenwood puts away LR Christian for 5A championship

Tyler Wilson ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another to lead Greenwood to a 27-6 victory Saturday over Little Rock Christian - and its third consecutive state title.

The Bulldogs built a 21-0 lead and held on to win the Class 5A championship game. The Warriors' only score came on a 26-yard pass from Griffin Kuhn with 1:18 left in the half.

Wilson finished with 237 yards passing and 77 yards rushing. He also punted three times for a 43-yard average.

"Tyler hasn't been running the ball much," Greenwood coach Rick Jones said. "But we had been holding back. When you get to the final game of the season there is no reason to hold back. He's a winner."

Matt Sindelar scored on a 1-yard run for Greenwood's second touchdown and the pass to Hogan capped the first half scoring. Austin Hartness kicked all three extra points. Dyer's score cut the margin to 21-6 at halftime. Kelsey Salman's extra point kick went wide.

The Greenwood defense had three interceptions and limited Little Rock Christian running back Michael Dyer to just 72 yards on 20 carries. The Bulldogs also forced three fumbles, but did not manage to recover any of them.

"You have to give our defense credit," Jones said. "They did a great job against a great running back."

It was the third straight state title for Greenwood (12-2), while Little Rock Christian (13-1) was in the state playoffs for only the third time. The west Little Rock school did not start its varsity football program until 2002.

Greenwood was the third team this season to win the state title after losing a regular season meeting with the other state finalist. In late October, Little Rock Christian crushed the Bulldogs 44-7.
