Earnings report

— Companies reporting quarterly earnings Tuesday included:

BP PLC, Europe's second-biggest oil company, reported net income slid 29 percent to $4.41 billion, or 23 cents a share, from $6.23 billion, or 31 cents, a year earlier. Revenue rose 2.7 percent to $72.6 billion. BP shares rose 1.2 percent to $12.54 on the London Stock Exchange.

AT&T Inc., the biggest U.S. telephone company, said third-quarter net income rose to $3.06 billion, or 50 cents a share. Earnings were $2.17 billion, or 56 cents, a year ago. Sales almost doubled to $30.1 billion because of major acquisitions and other factors. Shares rose 85 cents to $42.02.

United Parcel Service Inc., the world's biggest package-deliverycompany, said third-quarter net income climbed to $1.08 billion, or $1.02 a share, from $1.04 billion, or 96 cents, a year earlier. Sales increased 4.7 percent to $12.2 billion. Shares rose 55 cents to $75.64.

New York Times Co., the thirdlargest U.S. newspaper publisher, reported third-quarter net income increased to $13.4 million, or 9 cents a share, compared with $12.6 million, also 9 cents share, a year earlier. Sales climbed 2 percent to $754.4 million. Shares increased by $1.81 to $20.22.

The DuPont Co., a major chemical maker, said third-quarter net profit was $526 million, or 56 cents per share, compared with $485 million, or 52 cents per share, last year. Sales rose to $6.68 billion from$6.31 billion a year earlier. Shares rose 24 cents to $46.81.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., a major U.S. railroad, said third-quarter net income climbed to $530 million, or $1.48 a share, compared with $489 million, or $1.33 a share, last year. Sales increased 3.3 percent to $4.1 billion. Shares soared $3.54 to $86.52.

Lockheed Martin Corp., the world's largest defense contractor, reported third-quarter earnings of $766 million, or $1.80 per share, up from $629 million, or $1.46 per share, a year ago. Revenue was $11.1 billion, 16 percent above the 2006 result of $9.6 billion. Shares dropped 27 cents to $106.97.
