House hits voting milestone of 1,000

WASHINGTON - The House reached a landmark Wednesday with the holding of a record 1,000th vote of the year.

The vote was on a bill to give self-autonomy to Native Hawaiians, extending the previous record of 942 votes in a year set in 1978.

The new Democratic majority, which took control in January, hascut back on recesses and staged more votes on Mondays and Fridays. But the record vote figure has also been padded by the frequency of procedural votes, such as quorum calls, votes to approve the Congressional Record or votes to adjourn when the Republican minority is upset.

The inception of electronic voting has also contributed to the increase of House votes.
