Second thoughts

— GM's home still standing as fires blaze

Phoenix Suns General Manager Steve Kerr was among the hundreds of thousands forced toevacuate from their homes in or near San Diego because of advancing wildfires.

Kerr said his family was evacuated Monday morning from its home in Rancho Santa Fe, north of San Diego.

Kerr said he and his family are staying with a friend.

"There have been about 30 homes in our neighborhood that have burned down," Kerr told KTAR radio in a telephone interview from San Diego on Tuesday night. "We've been lucky to this point. Our house is still standing and apparently things have taken a turn for the better.

We look like we're in good shape right now, but there's still a ways to go so it's a little scary."

The former University of Arizona and NBA player said several of his friends lost their homes.

"It's unbelievable of the magnitude of it all," Kerr said.

"We're all the way downtown probably 20 miles from the fire now, and there's still ash everywhere on the streets down here." Sort of like the Rockies

Tom Watson compared hissuccess this season to that of the Colorado Rockies.

Watson had eight top-10 finishes in 11 events, including victories in the Senior British Open and Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. He is in third place in the ChampionsTour's Schwab Cup season points race, behind Loren Roberts and Jay Haas.

"It has been a good year," Watson said. "One thing that has to do with it is that I had a longstretch where I played a lot and I kind of got on a roll. That's what happens in sports. Kind of like the Rockies. Well, I'm not on a roll like them; they are like Tiger [Woods].

But I'm pretty pleased with how I've played." Average in a good way

Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher (Little Rock Parkview, UALR) gave the Lakers a "C" forchemistry so far this preseason, reported Elliot Teaford in the South Bay Daily Breeze.

"I think it's average, in my opinion, and not in a bad way," Fisher said. "If you think about teams with good chemistry andthat doesn't mean holding hands in the park kind of stuff, but just really good team chemistry, I think ours is just really average right now."

Fisher said it should get better.

"We have a young team," he said. "We have a lot of guys who are really starting to get to know each other. We have young guys like Jordan [Farmar] and Javaris[Crittenton], who are really pushing for playing time. Andrew [Bynum] is forever young. I think we can be above average." New technique

The Cleveland Indians might have inadvertently created a new art form for trying to get inside the opponent'shead.

The pregame anthem singer for Game 5 of the American League Championship Series last Thursday was Danielle Peck, a country singer who once datedBoston starting pitcher Josh Beckett, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

Indians spokesman Bob DiBiasio called it "an incredible coincidence. Honestly.

"She's from Ohio," DiBiasio said. "Her entire family are Indians fans. We did not know anything about her connections to Beckett. The next day, we find out the rest of the story. How are we supposed to know who Josh Beckett dates ?"Quote of the day
