JONESBORO - W.H. York, visiting friends in Craighead County, was in Jonesboro and by chance met J.M.C. Rogers of that city, whom he had not seen since May 21, 1861, the day on which Mr. Rogers started to the Civil War. The place where Jonesboro is situated was then known as Willeytown.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1957

CLARKSVILLE - Activities connected with The College of the Ozarks homecoming were postponed and five more high schools were closed yesterday as the flu outbreak continued to spread. An upsurge in flu cases forced authorities to call a halt to all events on schedule except the Mountaineers' football game.

Tom Milton, foreman of the jury that convicted Mary (Lee) Orsini of capital murder, told Circuit Judge Randall Williams that Orsini had called at least one juror from the county jail and questioned the juror on issues that touched on the evidence in her case and the jury deliberation.

FAYETTEVILLE - Officials know it will take millions of dollars to clean up the University of Arkansas' decommissioned nuclear reactor near Strickler but just how many millions remains unclear. The university pays about $30,000 annually for maintenance and safety precautions for the reactor, which closed in 1972.
