HISTORY REPEATS: The past returns for military museum exhibit

— Special guests at an Oct. 18 reception opening a new exhibit, "The Forgotten War - Arkansas and the Korean Conflict," at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History were a surprise.

There they were - former President Harry S. Truman and Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Or at least they rather looked like those two famous men. But they were really Chautauqua scholars Neal Ferguson of Reno, Nev., and Noel Pugach of Albuquerque, N.M., both history professors.

Also there, but playing himself, was Clifton Truman Daniel of Chicago, Truman's grandson, who is director of public relations for Truman College, a two-year college. He is the oldest son of Margaret Truman and Clinton Daniel, and has two living brothers and one who is deceased. He worked as a journalist for 15 years, is married and has three children. His father was an editor for The New York Times.

Guests filled plates at a buffet centered with a large fall bouquet.

As the evening ended, the scholars debated the issues of MacArthur's firing by Truman one more time in a program moderated by Daniel.
