Size leads Lady Pirates in 2007

— Last season head coach Irvin Fairfield led the Concord Lady Pirates to a 25-9 record, but he graduated four starters.

The lone returning starter will be junior Paige Jeffery. At 5-7, she will be looked upon for her inside play as well as some much-needed leadership for the team.

Luckily for the Lady Pirates, they were the beneficiary of a transfer from Pangburn. Emilee Mote, a 5-11 senior post player, will look to contribute immediately for this Concord team.

"She's really athletic, strong on the low post and can step out and hit a 15-foot jump shot," Fairfield said.

Joining Mote and Jeffery on the court will be senior point guard Mindy Cooper, senior guard Kate Glascock and senior Brittany Bilcher.

Cooper will be looked upon to control the tempo of the game for the Lady Pirates. The 5-7 point guard can also hurt teams with her outside shot.

Glascock, 5-7, will be the three-point specialist on the teamand the "zone-buster," whereas Bilcher, 5-7, will lead the defensive charge for the team as well as pick up much needed rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will depend on their size and rebounding while their biggest weakness this year could be their quickness.

"We should have a good combination of inside-outside people," Fairfield said.

Fairfield expects his team to compete for the top half of the 1A-2 Conference. The early favorite could be West Side Greers Ferry, but Mount Vernon-Enola, Bradford and his own team could beat anyone on a given night, Fairfield said.
