Plywood mill's layoffs idling 300 in Crossett

Slowdown in housing forces Georgia-Pacific suspension

— For the second time in less than a year, Georgia-Pacific Corp. has laid off 300 workers after suspending operations at one of its two plywood mills in Crossett.

Monday's decision came after the company projected slow sales because of a weak housing market, said Teresa Walsh, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based company.

Walsh said company officials will re-evaluate the suspension of the plant at the end of February and will determine, on the basis of market conditions, where to go from there.
