UAMS' new power plant to save $3.5 million a year

— The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on Tuesday touted the energy-saving features of a new $32.3 million power plant on the campus.

Features at the plant, such as high-efficiency lighting, insulated windows and equipment to regulate energy consumption will save $3.5 million per year, UAMS said in a news release.

The plant will provide power to areas including 1 millionsquare feet of new construction at the university campus and the nearby Arkansas State Hospital and Arkansas Department of Health campus. During a power failure, the plant can provide power to all of UAMS' patient care areas.

UAMS' primary power source is a substation on Woodrow Street.

The energy saving features of the new plant, which became operational in late August, cost about $3.4 million.
