Bryant's Dijon Benton knows what people must think.

Here's dispelling that idea: The origin of his name is emphatically not from that.

But he's been making a new name for himself as an explosive talent on the football field, recording more than 150 career tackles in the highly competitive 7A conference.

Benton (6-2, 185) began playing in the fifth grade in El Dorado. He shuffled positions - defensive end in seventh grade, middle linebacker in the eighth - but has found his grove as wide receiver.

"I like taking the ball, making the big hits," he said of his playmaking abilities.

Those plays have put him on the radar for many college scouts. But Benton takes it all in stride.

"I don't feel any pressure," he said of being on the watch lists. "I just go out there and play my game. I have no worries about the recruiting process."

If football is one of Benton's loves, then family is the other.

He's the oldest of three boys, his brothers being 12 and 13. One has followed in his brother's footsteps and is playing football. They all live with their mom, Patricia Lee.

Come game time, Benton has his own cheering section when his aunt and uncle join his mom and brothers. Add to that number around 23,000 more fans, and it's one of the most highly anticipated games of the season: The annual Salt Bowl between Bryant and its closest rival, Benton.

Benton said he's ready to "go out and have fun and win" that game, but it's not the only one he's looking forward to. Little Rock Central, Cabot and North Little Rock also loom big on the schedule for Bryant.
