Ash Flat student awarded scholarship to ASU-Newport

— Arkansas State University-Newport awarded Tyler Scott Phillips of Ash Flat the ASU-Newport High Voltage Scholarship for the one-year program that begins Monday, Aug. 24. Phillips is the son of Bruce and Levita Phillips.

He is a 2009 graduate of Highland High School. During his high school years, Phillips was active in football and Future Farmers of America.

The Arkansas Rural Electric Cooperatives sponsor students to complete a one-year technical certificate in High Voltage Lineman Technology. There are a total of 17 electric cooperatives serving about 440,000 customers or members, covering more than 60 percent of Arkansas. Sponsored students are provided an internship with a particular electric cooperative and upon successful completion, are employed in a high-wage and high-demand field. Phillips is sponsored by the North Arkansas Electric Cooperative.
