BOWLING Jacksonville’s Mazzia manages another 800 series

— John Mazzia, manager of Professor Bowl West, ripped the pins for games of 300, 258, and 249 for an 807 series, and his second 800 series in the Roosevelt Mixed League at Millennium Bowl.

“The first 10 strikes were solid, then I went high and left the 2-pin,” said Mazzia, who’s retired from the Air Force. “I took rings for both awards and hit 31 of a possible 36 strikes.”

Mazzia, 37, of Jacksonville, started bowling at 7 at Bowl-A-Way Lanes in Benton. He has an 814 high, six 300 games, two 299s, and one each 298 and 11 strikes-in-arow award.

He used a Lane Master XXX Guarantee ball and averages 220.

GILLMORE SHINES

Shane Gillmore, the manager at Millennium Bowl, racked up his 26th 300 game to start play in the Millennium Mixed League at the center. He followed with games of 224 and 237 for a 761 series.

“Actually every ball was in the pocket, but I wasn’t hitting my mark on most shots,” Gillmore said. “It was one of those crazy nights.”

Gillmore started bowling at 14 at Forest Lanes in Morrilton. He has 11 800 series with 845 high, 11 299 games, three 298s, and 12 11-strikesin-a-row awards, including a 279.

ALLEN GIVES LESSONS

Conner Allen, 20, of Viliona was at it again, this time smashing his second 300 game at Allfam Bowl. The 300 followed games of 194 and 234 for a 728 series in the Cabot First League.

He wasn’t through as he added his third 300 game o start the Commercial League at Conway Bowl. He tacked on games of 246 and 202 for a 748 series

Allen, a student, started bowling at 6 at Conway Bowl. He used an Angular One ball, averages 225 and 229, has an803, two 299 games and one 11-strikes-in-a-row award.

FOURTH 300 FOR SALMON

Also in the Commercial Kyle Salmon ran off games of 300, 233 and 183 for a 716 series.

“I carried a few light hits, got lucky and the rest were solid,” said Salmon, a lane technician. “This was my fourth 300 game.”

Salmon, 22, started bowling at 10 at Conway. He has three 299 games, two 298s and three 11-strikes-in-a-row awards. He has a 781 high.

CAREER HIGH FOR HERBERT

Stuart Herbert, 47, of Jacksonville rolled games of 298, 221 and 279 for a career-high 798 series in the Ten Pin Mixed League at Allfam Bowl in Cabot.

“This was my third 298 game and I left a pocket 7-10 split the last ball, the second time I’ve done this,” said Herbert, a supervisor at Democrat Printing & Lithographing Co. “The rest of the strikes were there. I thought I might roll 800.”

Herbert started bowling at 30 at Heber Lanes in Heber Springs. He has six 300 games, four 299s, and one 11-strikes-in-a-row award.

THOMPSON ON TOP

Fort Smith’s Dewayne Thompson finally made it to the top of the heap when he won the nonchamps SASBA tournament at Bandera Super Bowl in San Antonio.

Thompson, who defeated Ted Vascocu of Shreveport, finished with a 4-4 match game record but held a 22-pin lead heading into the titlemath. This meant Vascocu had to win by 23 pins.

Vascocu opened, then ran off a six-bagger to take the lead. Thompson added some strikes, and entering the 10th frame, Vascocu could strike out to force Thompson to double. Vascocu got the first strike and then left a 7-pin.

This forced Thompson to go 9/9 to win, and he struck on his first ball to pick up the first-place check of $1,000.

FIRST 299 FOR PRESLEY

John Presley, 71, of Roland,who’s retired from the Air Force, knocked out his first 299 game to start the night, then closed with games of 191 and 170 for a 660 series.

Presley started bowling at 22 at Pla Mor Lanes in Little Rock, he has three 300 games and a 749 high.

DIS ’N’ DATA

Jennifer Wier shot 237 and 226 for 670 in the Ten Pin Mixed; and Tasha Brown 235 and 238 for 661 in the Monday Mixed at Allfam Bowl and received the Arkansas StateWomen’s Bowling Association 650 award.

Jerry Hagle with 290 in theHot Springs Classic at Central Lanes in Hot Springs received the 11-strikes-in-a-row award.
