When reached by phone Thursday Arkansas State Athletic Director Dean Lee would not confirm Hugh Freeze, who served as former coach Steve Roberts' offensive coordinator in 2010, will be named new coach at the 5:30 p.m. press conference. But Lee did say the timing of the announcement would suggest so. "I think that's a pretty good assumption based on how quickly we are moving," Lee said.

No one answered the phone at Freeze's office number at ASU early Thursday afternoon.

The vacancy occurred earlier this week when coach Steve Roberts resigned. He had a 45-63 record in 9 years leading the program.

Freeze spoke Monday at the Little Rock Touchdown Club hours before Roberts' resignation was formally announced. Freeze said then he didn't know anything about the next head coach.

“I have no idea," he said. "That is the administration’s call. Until I hear otherwise, I’m going to continue with my job.”
