OBU grad wins Miss Arkansas; area contestants also win awards

— Miss South Central Arkansas Alyse Eady of Fort Smith was crowned Miss Arkansas 2010 Saturday night at Summit Arena in Hot Springs.

Eady is the 22-year-old daughter of Lewis and Lady Eady of Fort Smith. She is a recent graduate of Ouachita Baptist University with degrees in mass communication and speech.

She received a $20,000 scholarship provided by Ted and Shannon Boy Skokos and more than $50,000 in awards, wardrobe, transportation and gifts.

Her awards included the Coleman Dairy Overall Talent Award of $2,000 and a preliminary talent award of $800 in a three-way tie on July 15.

Eady will represent Arkansas at the 2011 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas and will make appearances across Arkansas to promote the Children’s Miracle Network and to speak in support of the goals of the Miss Arkansas and Miss America system.

For her talent presentation at the pageant, Eady performed a vocal/ventriloquist act to “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart.” Her platform issue is “Developing Leaders: Boys and Girls Club of America.”

Other contestants with ties to the Tri-Lakes coverage area who earned awards at the pageant include the following:

◊Miss Northwest Arkansas Amy Crain of Hot Springswas named second runner-up in the pageant. She received a $7,000 scholarship for this award.

Cra in, t he 20 -yea r-old daughter of Jimmy and Terry Crain, also won the P i ne B lu f f D a nc e Ac a demy Overall Dance Express Yourself Award of $250; the Children’s Miracle Network Miracle Maker Award; a preliminary talent award of $800 in a three-way tie on July 15; and a preliminary swimsuit award of $800 in a two-way tie on Friday.

Her talent was a clogging dance to “Game Time,” and her platform issue is “Bullying: Prevention and Recovery.”

◊Miss Cotton Belle Kristen Glover of Stuttgart, who was named third runner-up, received a $6,000 scholarship for this award.

Glover, the 20-year-old daughter of Keith and Mary Glover, is a senior at OBU. Her talent was a tap dance to “I’ve Got Rhythm,” and her platform issue is “Second Chances: Empowering Youth to Rise Above.”

Glover also won the Miss Arkansas Pageant Executive Director’s Crowd Favorite Award of $500 and the Eco-Tool Green and Gorgeous Award of $250, and was a preliminary talent winner of $800 on Friday.

◊Miss Ouachita Baptist University Bethany Briscoe of Plano, Texas, was a semifinalist and a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship.

Briscoe, the 22-year-old daughter of Rick and Barbi Briscoe, sang, “I Got It Bad - And That Ain’t Good” for her talent. Her platform issue is “Radiance: Shining New Light on Self-esteem.”

◊Miss Spirit of Arkansas Bethany Whitfield of Bryant won the Brad Hudgens/Morgan Stanley Finance and Investment in Leadership Award of $1,000; the Miss America Community Service Award of $1,000, an award given in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico; and a preliminary swimsuit award of $800 on July 15.

Whitfield, the 21-year-old daughter of Donny and Tanya Whitfield and a studentat OBU, sang “Somebody to Love” for her talent. Her platform issue is “Manage: Personal Finance for Practical Living.”

◊Miss Greater Hot Springs Molly Johnson of Gillett won the Shannon Albright Miss Congeniality Award of $250.

Johnson, the 21-year-old daughter of V.O. and Sue Johnson and a student at OBU, sang “Anyway” for her talent. Her platform issue is “You Can Lend a Hand: Encouraging Volunteerism.”

◊Miss Ouachita River Melissa Davis of Hot Springs was named to the Top 15 contestants. The 22-year-old daughter of Dale Davis of Homer, La., and Pamela Davis of Waldo and a student at the University of Central Arkansas, she performed an a cappella tap dance to “Queen of the Beats,” and her platform issue is “Heart to Heart.”

◊Miss University of Arkansas Kimberly Smith of Hot Springs was named to the Top15 contestants. The 21-yearold daughter of Bryan and Karen Smith, she received the Gracie Nail Non-Finalist Vocalist Award of $250. For her talent, she sang “Let It Be,” and her platform issue is “It All Adds Up: Healthier Choices = Healthier Life.”
