Public invited to meet Master Gardeners on Tuesday

— The Faulkner County Master Gardeners will be on hand to introduce the public to the Arkansas Master Gardening program at a “Meet the Master Gardeners” evening at 7 Tuesday at the Natural Resources Center, 110 Amity Road in Conway.

The public is invited to meet Faulkner County Master Gardeners, review displays of current local projects and ask questions about the Faulkner County program. Topics will include training requirements and membership commitmentand will be reviewed by Kami Marsh, Faulkner County Cooperative Extension Service agent and Master Gardener adviser, FCMG President Jan Spann or other leaders in the group. Anyone who might be interested in joining the group is encouraged to attend this informative event.

A training committee has been meeting since January to prepare the program for the2010 training course, which will be held at the Natural Resources Center on Tuesdays from Sept. 28 to Nov. 9. The training program of seven day-long classes is a prerequisite for membership in the Master Gardener program and gives participants an overview of all aspects of gardening and horticulture from basic botany and plant diseases to composting and landscaping.

The training sessions, some of which will be held off-site at local orchards and nurseries, will be conducted by MasterGardeners, Extension staff and other gardening experts from around the state, including Janet Carson, horticulture specialist; Deena Culberson of Culberson Greenhouses; Jeb Leggett of Custom Landscape and Nursery; and Krista Quinn, executive director, Arkansas Flower and Garden Show.

Participants will also become acquainted with the ongoing Master Gardener landscaping projects in Faulkner County and will be trained as auxiliary resources for the local Extension Service Office.
