Angels’ Haren hit by line drive

— Dan Haren left his first start for the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth inning Monday night after a line drive by Boston’s Kevin Youkilis hit him in the right arm.

The Angels said Haren has a bruised forearm. He will be reexamined today by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Los Angeles acquired Haren in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, and immediately put him on the Angel Stadium mound against the Red Sox.

The three-time All-Star had eight strikeouts and gave up two runs before Youkilis hit a two-out drive back to the mound. Haren was hit in the arm while attempting to catch it, and he dropped to his knees in pain on the infield grass.

Haren yielded seven hits in 4 /3 innings, including David Ortiz’s home run in the third, but largely stayed out of trouble in 62 pitches. The Los Angeles-area native began the day second in the NL with 141 strikeouts for the Diamondbacks, and he struck out everybody in the Boston lineup except Marco Scutaro and Adrian Beltre.

Francisco Rodriguez replaced Haren with Los Angeles trailing the Red Sox 2-1.

The Angels gave up dependable left-hander Joe Saunders, pitchers Rafael Rodriguez and Patrick Corbin, and a prospect to be named to land Haren, who has been a model of durability in his major league career. The right-hander has made at least 33 starts in each of his five full major league seasons with Oakland and Arizona.
