Jacksonville coach leaves for Springdale

— Jacksonville Coach Mark Whatley resigned Monday to become offensive coordinator at Springdale, Bulldogs Coach Shane Patrick said.

In five seasons at Class 6A Jacksonville, Whatley was 23-31, including 2-8 last fall.

Whatley replaces Eli Drinkwitz, who left earlier this month to join Auburn’s offensive quality control staff.

Whatley was the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Coach of the Year in 1990 after leading Rison to an 11-2 record and a27-20 victory over Barton in the Class A final, ending the Bears’ 63-game winning streak.

Whatley also guided Rison to the Class A title in 1991 before leaving in 1993 to coach Ozark.

Whatley then coached Ashdown and Newport before arriving in Jacksonville, his alma mater, in 2005.

Whatley has a 115-103-3 career record.

Patrick was named coach of the Class 7A Bulldogs in January after spending the previous seven seasons at Mountain Home.
