ANN ONEIDA “ANITA” MORRIS PHIPPS, 93, of North Little Rock, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010. She was the fourth of five children born to Marguerite Adkins and Christopher Columbus Morris on August 22, 1916, in North Little Rock, Arkansas. She mether husband to be, Woodrow Elmer Phipps, when he was a soda jerk at Argenta Drugstore at 4th and Main in North Little Rock. He said she was a little “snotty-nosed kid” who hung around and got all his clean glasses dirty! Woodrow was the son of William Elmer and Minona Rankin Phipps. Mr. Phipps had a PHD. And Mrs. Phipps had an MA-rare for a woman born in 1895! She was the grand old English and Latin teacher of North Little Rock High. Mr. Phipps was the Superintendent of Schools of North Little Rock, the State Superintendent of Education for the State of Arkansas, and also the City Attorney for North Little Rock for several terms. Woodrow and Anita, her nickname, were married on August 11, 1934, while Woodrow was still in college at Hendrix. Anita was graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Little Rock Junior College (now LRU.) She worked for Workers’ Compensation for the State of Arkansas for ten years, until she gave birth to their only child, Jephrey AnnPhipps, on December 15, 1943. She spelled “Jephrey “ with a “ph” to alliterate with the “ph” in “Phipps,” but she never told her the reason until Jephrey was in her 40’s! Dr. Woodrow Phipps became an abdominal surgeon and a Family Practitioner. He served as a Captain in the US Army in Chester, England, for two years. He remembered hearing when Glen Miller’s flight went down. Anita did volunteer work with the Junior Service League of North Little Rock and was a member of a bridge club. When Woodrow took flying lessons at Central Flying Service, Anita did too; and she became an active memberof the WNAA: the Women’s National Aeronautical Association. They flew together to medical conventions and to every single Razorback game while Arkansas was in the Southwest Conference. They flew to one medical convention in Chicago in which Dr. Phipps was inducted into the International College of Physicians. Anita was active in campaigning for Woodrow’s father in his runs for City Attorney, for Woodrow in his runs for School Board and for the North Little Rock City Council, and for the best achievement of all: they and other North Little Rock leaders passed a bond issue to obtain Hill-Burton funds for the construction of North Little Rock’s Memorial Hospital. Little Rock Air Force base was new, and there was the cold war. If the Russians should bomb the bridges crossing the Arkansas river, North Little Rock would have been without hospital care. And to top it all, Anita is a top-notch mother and grandmother! Happy 93rd birthday!

Surviving her is her only child, a daughter, Jephrey Ann Phipps Hubener of 29 Greathouse Bend in Little Rock; a grandson, David Christensen Hubener and his wife, Brandy, also of 29 Greathouse Bend, Little Rock; a granddaughter, Erin Phipps Hubener Peloquin and her husband, Michael Laurice Peloquin of Austin, Texas; and four great-grandchildren: Ella Faith Hubener, Sophie Phipps Peloquin, Briggs Christensen Hubener, and Livia Hubener Peloquin.

A celebration of her outstanding life will be held at her church, First Methodist Church at 6701 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, in charge of John Smith, North Little Rock Funeral Home, son of Anita’s former companion, Clifford Smith, who founded North Little Rock Funeral Home on the advice of Anita’s husband.

Memorials may be sent to the Lee Archer Chair in the Neurology Department of UAMS at 4301 West Markham, 72205; First United Methodist Church at 6701 JFK in North Little Rock; Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 310 West 17th, 72206, in Little Rock; or Heifer Project at 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, 72202. Burial will be private because of the heat.

CHARLES E. “MONK” WADE, retired Executive Director of theArkansas State Golf Association (ASGA) and long-time banker at Worthen Bank & Trust Company, died Sunday, June 20, at the age of 90. Monk was born in Little Rock and earned his almost lifelong nickname at an early age, being referred to as “that little monkey” by his grandfather for his love of climbing trees. He graduated from Central High in 1938, after lettering on the Tiger golf team and playing a 1937 state tournament match against future Country Club of Little Rock head professional Junior Lewis. After a brief stint at Fones Bros. hardware, Monk began his banking career at Worthen in June, 1940, in a back-office clerical role. He retired 46 years later, in March, 1986, as a Senior Vice President. At the time of his retirement, he was referred to as the “dean of Little Rock bankers” in an Arkansas Democrat article, which noted that his career spanned from the era of adding machines and manual ledgers to that of desktop computers and ATMs. Monk spent almost six years in the Army, including the entire period from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day. He was drafted in 1940, and served in the Coast Artillery in California for the entire war, rising to the rank of Sergeant. The major hearing challenges he faced during his later years could be traced in large part to the many hours he spent on artillery ranges during the war. After returning to Little Rock and rejoining Worthen in 1946, Monk played on the bank’s highly competitive men’s fast-pitch softball teams, which frequently competed in major national tournaments and won at least one national championship in the early ’50s. Monk’s career at Worthen included a variety of pioneer management roles in the 1960s. He led the bank’s Credit Card and Marketing Departments at their earliest stages of development, and oversaw its rapidly expanding group of branch offices. From the early ’70s through the end of his career in 1986, Worthen’s executive management team recognized Monk’s natural talent for sales and public relations by making business development his primary duty. For countless Worthen customers of that era, including many of its largest, he was the face of the bank. His love for developing new business led him to continue to pursue new customers for the bank for many years after his formal retirement. In 1975, Monk’s talent for public relations and his lifelong love of golf led to his “second calling” - the role of Executive Director of the ASGA, which at that time was a part-time position that Worthen CEO Ed Penick urged Monk to take on as a way to meet more potential bank customers. Legend has it that at the outset of Monk’s tenure with the ASGA, all of its records were delivered to his home in a shoebox. From that humble beginning, in a home office in their son’s former bedroom, the ASGA grew under Monk’s 15-yearleadership to one of the nation’s best state golf associations, one which today has several full-time paid staff members, a 3000-square foot office, and a membership of thousands of Arkansas golfers. In 1979, Monk started the event that would become his legacy in Arkansas golf - the ASGA Monk Wade Father-Son Championship. Renamed in Monk’s honor by the ASGA board in 2001, the tournament provides as many as 500 Arkansas fathers and sons each year with two days of competitive golf and a popular forum for fellowship with other golfers from throughout the state. Beginning in 2001, the ASGA board also decided that the Monk Wade Father & Son Championship would begin serving as a platform for raising awareness of the importance of early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer. With the support of the ASGA board, Monk agreed to step forward and publicly acknowledge his own battle against prostate cancer at a time whenpublic discussion of the disease was still uncommon. His courage in doing so was recognized for several years by the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation at its annual fundraising event, “Boys and Their Toys.” Monk was elected to the ASGA’s Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame in 1996. His dedication to promoting scholarship among the ASGA’s junior golfers was recognized in 2005 with the naming of one of the classrooms at the First Tee of Central Arkansas’ Jack Stephens Golf Academy in his honor. A member of Pleasant Valley Country Club since it was Riverdale Country Club in 1965, Monk was also honored in 2002 by being named an honorary member for life by the club’s Board of Governors. In recent years, as he endured increasing health challenges and the loss of Vera, his wife of 56 years, Monk often shared that the most important things in a man’s life should be faith in Christ, devotion to his family, and dedication to his job - in that order. He became aChristian in 1949 and had been a member of Little Rock’s First Baptist Church since that time. He often told his family and caregivers that he was ready to join God and to be reunited with Vera in Heaven. Those who loved him can rejoice that this reunion took place this Sunday morning.

Monk is survived by his son, Steve Wade, and his wife Ginger, of Little Rock, and by his grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann “E.A.” Wade and Jim Wade. He is also survived by his brother’s widow, Pearl Wade, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Vera Croach Wade, his parents, his three brothers, and his sister.

A private burial service for the family will be held Wednesday morning, June 23. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday evening at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home on Chenal Parkway. A public service in celebration of his life will be held at Little Rock’s First Baptist Church, at Pleasant Valley Drive and Rodney Parham, on Thursday, June 24, at 10 a.m.,

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ASGA Scholarship Fund, c/o Arkansas State Golf Association, Golf House, P.O. Box 30250, Little Rock, Ark. 72260, the First Tee of Central Arkansas, 1 First Tee Way, Little Rock, Ark.72204, or Little Rock’s First Baptist Church, 62 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, Ark. 72212.

On behalf of Monk, his family extends its heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and staff of Pleasant Hills Retirement Center’s Residential Care Neighborhood, where Monk lived from 2006 until recent weeks, the entire care team at the Baptist Health main campus, and the caregivers of Baptist Health’s Parkway Health Center and Baptist Health Hospice. BEAVER LAKE - Edna Norfleet Cook of Beaver Lake, formerly of Wynne, died June 21, 2010. Her Sweet Savior welcomed her with the words, “Well done, My good and faithful servant.” She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a beloved Christian role model and trusted friend. She was the widow of John Cook. Born in February 9, 1918, to Robert and Annie Norfleet of Tate County, Miss., she graduated from Senatobia High School and attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College. Except for a brief time in Memphis, where she met and married John, and her twilight years at the Lake, she lived her adult life in Wynne. For decades an original needlepoint created by one of her children, hung above her busy sewing machine. It read, “My Mother can do it!” and depicted the many roles in which “Grander” excelled: sewing, baking, music and even a gavel representing the many community and church organizations she served. The family dining roomtable was the gathering spot for holidays to enjoy her wonderful cooking (fabulous homemade rolls, coconut cake, chocolate pie), centerpieces with flowers from her yard (peonies a specialty), her quick wit, never failing optimism and good cheer. She was never too busy to transform this same formal dining table into a big tent draped with heirloom quilts and the chairs turned in a magical way to make tunnel entrances for her children, then grand children and even great grands. A gifted artist and writer, she designed special occasion cards and poems for her family.

DALLAS - Church Member Filled Other Lives with Compassion and Hugs. Elsie McCallum, age 107, went to be with her Lord and her beloved Ed on June 17, 2010. Elsie was born on May 10, 1903, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Dee and Genie Lybrand. She attended Pine Bluff public schools and graduated from Central High School. She developed a great love for flying and at age 18 flew in an open cockpit aircraft to New Orleans from Pine Bluff. Following graduation she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. She continued her love for aviation and was a member of the Women National Aeronautical Association. While in Tulsa, Elsie met and married Edmund Cooper McCallum, head of the Land Department of Amoco Oil Company. They were active supporters of the arts community and especially the Tulsa Little Theater.

She and Ed enjoyed many trips to attend special performances of Symphonies, Operas and Broadway productions. While in Tulsa, Elsie was the first woman to serve on a Federal Grand Jury. Following Ed’s retirement with Amoco and Company in 1953, Elsie and Ed moved to Dallas where he joined General American Oil. Ed passed away in 1978 while enjoying afternoon tea with Elsie. Upon moving to Dallas, Elsie began a lifetime oflove of service to the Altar Guild at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. She was an active member and Honorary Directress of the Altar Guild at the time of her death.

Elsie is not survived by children, but a church parish of thousands of members she called her family. She loved everyone with a wonderful smile, concern for well being and opened arms for that special hug.

In honor of her 100th birthday, St. Michael and All Angels members made contributions in her name to the chapel restoration project. The church also presented her with a special commemorative chair for her dedicated service.

In addition to her St. Michael family, Elsie is survived by her great-niece Candy Miller and husband Keith; and two great-greatnieces, Kori Miller Smith and husband Chad and Karis Miller; and nephews Ronald Lybrand, Howard Wayne Lybrand and Jim Lybrand. She was preceded in death by her sister Lola; and brothers Floyd, Howard and Dewell. Elsie is also survived by her many friends who are members of the staff at the Shelton.

She has said many times that there are “not enough good words for the entire staff at the Shelton Condominiums ... it couldn’t be more fabulous or the service greater.”

A heart full of thanks is extended to the caregivers from Health Bridge, particularly Jane, Caroline Sophie and Patricia. A service of Burial of the Dead will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church with burial following at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
