County district’s board to set goals at meeting

— The School Board for the Pulaski County Special School District has scheduled a retreat today to help create performance objectives for its new superintendent and board operating principles.

The session follows the hiring of a new superintendent and a legislative audit that outlined widespread financial mismanagement by the district and board.

On April 15, the board voted to hire Charles Hopson, 52, an Arkansas native. He is a deputy superintendent in the Portland,Ore., school system. Hopson officially begins work in the Pulaski County Special district Thursday.

The state’s Legislative Audit Division issued a report May 14 that showed, among other things, the district overpaid a former superintendent, improperly reimbursed School Board members for expenses and failed to catch the theft of nearly $500,000 in equipment.

Today’s School Board retreat will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Presidential Hotel, 600 Interstate 30, in Little Rock.
