Uncle Sam will probably give new recruits a chance to make good in the army next month, according to Maj. Charles B. Ewing, who took charge of the recruiting station in Little Rock yesterday. For several months men without previous army experience have been barred from entering the ranks and only a limited number of applicants have been allowed to re-enlist as there have been but few vacancies to fill.

Efforts of the city of North Little Rock to acquire the 5,200-acre tract of the Maumelle Ordnance Plant were deflated last night by the government’s rejection of the city’s offer to buy the property. Akin Industries Inc. will get as much as $14,000 for each job it creates by reopening a Dumas furniture plant - just $2,000 less than the average annual salary it plans to pay there, government documents and company officials say. The subsidies include a 10-year, $1.7 million interestfree loan with no payments for two years, as well as an estimated $400,000 in tax breaks and cash. And, if the company creates 100 jobs as promised, it won’t have to pay back $500,000 of the loan, according to the government contract.
