Conway students win awards at media festival

— The Arkansas Association of Instructional Media held its annual Student Media Festival on April 17 in Hot Springs.

Students from across the state competed in a variety of media categories, including sequential stills, interactive stills, live-action video, animation, digital photography, podcasting and website design.

During the school year, Jamille Rogers, media specialist at Marguerite Vann Elementary School, works with students to create media projects. She said she believes this gives the students another way to express their creativity and encourages learning across the curriculum.

AAIM created the Student Media Festival to help students improve their reading comprehension, research and writing skills. Multimedia creation also encourages active student involvement.

Entries were scored according to grade classification, content and organization, technical quality and general effectiveness.

The following students represented Vann Elementary School and the Conway School District at the statewide festival in the K-3 classification:

◊Lauren Murphy, thirdgrader, first place, sequential stills without audio category.

◊ Brayden Vail and Paxson Amy, kindergartners, first place, black and white photography.

◊Brayden Vail and Reagan Padilla, kindergartners, certificates of participation, color photography.

◊Jordan Harris and Elizabeth Ward, second-graders, certificates of participation, black and white photography.

Rogers said this was the first year that students at Vann Elementar y participated in the student media festival.

“I can’t wait to get started on entries for next school year,” she said.
