New PB police chief to be installed

Pine Bluff will introduce Brenda Davis-Jones as the city's new chief of police Wednesday.

The southeastern Arkansas city has been without a permanent chief since March, when Mayor Carl Redus Jr. fired John Howell for insubordination.

Collier Hill, a retired assistant police chief at the Tucson, Ariz., Police Department was in place as the interim chief since April.

Redus terminated Howell at a March 8 meeting at City Hall after an argument about anti-crime initiatives in Pine Bluff.

At a March 15 meeting, five Pine Bluff City Council members voted to reinstate him and three voted against. The council needed a two-thirds vote to override the mayor’s decision.

Howell filed a lawsuit in April that alleges that Redus, on several occasions in 2009 and 2010, insisted that Howell allow him to become privy to criminal investigation files.
