— 100 YEARS AGO June 30, 1910 FORT SMITH - After being in session ten days, the Grand Jury adjourned yesterday afternoon. In its final report it says that the insane wards at the county hospital are not thoroughly sanitary, and that the patients are not as comfortable as they should be. Flies are numerous in the kitchen and in some of the wards, and there is not sufficient help, according to the report. It is recommended that one or more nurses be employed at the institution.

50 YEARS AGO June 30, 1960 WASHINGTON - Major projects on the Arkansas River and the Ouachita River in Arkansas and Louisiana have advanced on two congressional fronts. One congressional committee approved authorization for Arkansas projects, while another boosted appropriations for Arkansas work yesterday. A Senate-House Conference Committee agreed on a compromise bill to authorize future construction of $1.5 billion worth of water projects, including $43.5 million for a 9-foot channel onthe Ouachita River.

25 YEARS AGO June 30, 1985

A fire late Saturday afternoon at the Rock Creek Court Apartments in west Little Rock caused an estimated $1.2 million in damage to more than 60 units of the uncompleted 374-unit complex, Little Rock Fire Department officials said. No one was injured in the blaze at the complex located at 13500 W. Markham St. None of the units, some of which were expected to open July 13, was occupied. The buildings were located near Parkway Village Inc., 14300 Rock Creek Parkway, a community for the elderly.

A group of south Arkansas tomato farmers has sued the American unit of BASF AG, one of the world’s largest chemical companies, blaming its Facet rice herbicide for ruining crops. The classaction lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Little Rock, charges BASF with negligence in distributing an inherently dangerous product in Arkansas without regard for the damage it causes to other crops.
