SOUTHLAND MEN: Hawaii visit no luau for UCA

— Zane Johnson and Bill Amis each scored 15 points and Hawaii used a huge surge over the final 10 minutes of the first half to beat Central Arkansas 83-69 on Friday night.

Bo Barnes added 14 points and Josten Thomas had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Hawaii (4-0).

Carlos Dos Santos scored 17 points and Ryan Williams scored 15 of his 16 in the second half for the Bears (1-2).

Mike Pouncy’s threepointer gave UCA a 20-15 lead midway through the first half. But the Rainbow Warriors outscored the Bears 31-10 over the rest of the half, including 3 three-pointers by Barnes.

Trevor Wiseman’s basket with 14:48 remaining gave Hawaii its largest lead at 60-37. UCA got as close as 78-69 with 51 seconds left after a steal and layup by Williams.

SOUTHLAND WOMEN NORFOLK STATE 70, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 69, OT

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Freshman Carlon Chambers hit two free throws with two seconds left in overtime to give Norfolk State a victory over Central Arkansas on Saturday in the Comfort Inn and Suites Classic at Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

With the Sugar Bears (1-3) leading 69-68 with 38 seconds left after Norfolk State’s Rae Carbo’s free throw, they were unable to convert on the offensive end and the Spartans (3-0) had a chance to take the lead. Chambers got the offensive rebound off a miss by Whitney Long with seven seconds left, but had the ball knocked away and was fouledby UCA guard Sidney Stewart.

Megan Herbert led UCA with 19 points and nine rebounds. Destinee Rogers scored 13 points and Stewart had 11 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

The Sugar Bears, who trailed 32-27 at halftime, shot 37.9 percent from the field and hit just 12 of 25 free throws. UCA led 61-55 with 3:46 left in regulation, but Norfolk State came back to tie the game at 61-61 with 1:34 left. Courtney Duever missed two free throws with nine seconds left, which would have given the Sugar Bears the lead.

Batavia Owens had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Norfolk State. Marian Brooks scored 13 points.
