Children's Hospital earns top trauma designation

— Arkansas Children's Hospital has been named the state's only pediatric Level I trauma center, the hospital announced Monday.

The facility received the maximum four-year designation for top-tier trauma care after a review this month by the state Department of Health.

They are the second hospital in the state to earn the designation, behind the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. The Med in Memphis also has the designation in Arkansas.

“The Level I designation shows that Arkansas Children’s Hospital is determined to do whatever it takes to give children who are injured the very best chance for recovery,” hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jonathan Bates said in a news release. “We’re ready to see more lives saved because of the changes made statewide under the new system.”

Those changes included hiring a new trauma medical director and trauma nursing director and focusing extensive training for nurses in the emergency department, operating rooms and intensive care unit

The two-day review featured a survey of all aspects of the hospital's care of injured children, including the emergency room, the blood bank and the radiology and rehabilitation programs. No deficiencies were cited in the report.
