Thea Foundation offers much more than art scholarships

The Thea Foundation gives scholarships to art students, but that’s only a portion of its mission, which is to encourage young people to participate in the arts and to advocate for the importance of arts in education, as Eric E. Harrison reports in Wednesday’s Family section.

“People have us stereotyped. It’s a myth that we just give arts scholarships for art students,” says foundation co-founder and executive director Paul Leopoulos. “We do honor kids involved in the arts, and we help young people believe in themselves through experiences in arts-related activities.”

That includes putting art exhibits into schools statewide; holding student art shows and events like “Thea Paves the Way,” in which high school students from across the state create chalk masterpieces on the sidewalks of the Clinton Presidential Center; sponsoring theater and dance workshops; and a project called Thea’s Art Closet, which provides art supplies for cash-strapped schools.
