— FOOTBALL Broyles semifinalists named

Six SEC assistant coaches are among the semifinalists for the 2010 Broyles Award.

Arkansas offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Garrick McGee, Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, Kentucky offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders, LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis and South Carolina running backs coach Jay Grahm have been nominated for the award, which honors the top assistant coach in college football.

Illinois offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Paul Petrino, a former Arkansas assistant, and TCU defensive coordinator/ defensive line coach Dick Bumpas, an All-American defensive tackle at Arkansas in 1970, were also nominated.

The five finalists for the Broyles Award will be announced Monday. The winner will be announced on Dec. 6.

BASEBALL Fair selects new coach

Carl Martinous, a former assistant coach for Little Rock Catholic High School, has been named the new head baseball coach at Little Rock Fair.

Martinous has also been a head coach before at the high school level. Martinous has played, been on staff and has been an administrator at the collegiate level as well. He also founded the nonprofit organization called the Arkansas Baseball Academy, which helps aid high school players to find a place to play in college, and has been in existence since 2006.

GOLF Benton signs with UALR

Colby Benton of Cabot High School has signed a national letter of intent to play for UALR.

Benton is a three-time all-state player and was the Arkansas State Golf Association junior player of the year runner-up in 2009 and 2010.

Benton’s brother, Nick, is a sophomore on the team.

SOFTBALL Williams Baptist signs recruit

Lauren Sweeten of Sheridan High School has signed a national letter of intent to play for Williams Baptist in Walnut Ridge.

Sweeten is a three-time all-conference second baseman.

BASKETBALL Farmer, Lee earn conference honors

Arkansas-Monticello guard LA Farmer was named West Division men’s player of the week Tuesday by the Gulf South Conference.

Farmer scored 19 points and had nine rebounds in an 82-70 victory at Centenary last week. Farmer also scored 30 points in an 86-51 home victory over Shepherd Tech.

Southern Arkansas forward Cha’Kia Lee was named the conference’s West Division women’s player of the week. She averaged 21 points and nine rebounds per game last week at the Delta State Lloyd Clark Classic in Cleveland, Miss.
