Blair: Israel must do more to ease Gaza blockade

International Mideast envoy Tony Blair says Israel needs to do more to ease its blockade of Gaza and allow exports from the Hamas-ruled territory.

Blair discussed the issue on Sunday with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The former British prime minister told The Associated Press that he hopes to see progress soon, noting that exports are crucial for reviving Gaza’s battered economy.

Israel eased its blockade in June amid criticism over its deadly raid of a Gaza-bound flotilla. But it continues to restrict the important of key raw materials, and almost all exports are banned. Israel cites security concerns.

Blair said he urged Netanyahu to do more to lift Gaza’s economy. The Israeli leader’s office refused to comment.
