New enclosure enables rehab of injured eagles

— A new enclosure at the central Arkansas home of a raptor specialist will serve as a refuge for injured eagles and vultures, which can be treated and then returned to the wild.

Raptor rehabilitator Rodney Paul of El Paso on Tuesday unveiled a new pen that’s 20 feet high and 100 feet long, in which injured birds can fly a bit as they recover.

Entergy Arkansas contributed $13,000 for construction, and installed the 26 utility poles that support the structure.

Paul says anyone spotting an injured hawk or eagle should call the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission or a licensed raptor rehabilitator. He says it’s not a good idea to handle an injured bird, and he cautions that the bird’s talons can do as much damage as its beak.
