— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1910

The “Royal Blue Flyer” is in the limelight again. This is the pigeon which pilots the train crews of the Iron Mountain over the road between Malvern and Arkadelphia and sometimes as far south as Gurdon. Engineer John W. Adams and Fireman H.W. Hunter of passenger train No. 4, which arrived in Little Rock yesterday morning, report having been piloted by the bird from Elmore to Malvern, a distance of 10 miles, as they were coming up the road.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1960

The Arkansas Power & Light Co. has refused to recognize North Little Rock’s self-made light bill reduction. AP&L notified the city that the delinquency, nearly $30,000, would be added to the September bill. However, the city is figuring its own power bill, on a rate that they claim was legally negotiated in 1950, and which they claim AP&L wrongfully increased in 1956.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1985

A campaign to amend the Arkansas Constitution to prohibit spending state money for abortions will kick off next month, Earlene Windsor, chairman of Arkansas Right To Life, said Sunday. A similar petition drive in 1984 gained thousands of signatures, but the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that its ballot title - the Unborn Child Amendment - was unconstitutional. The text of the proposal that the anti-abortion group hopes to submit to voters next year is nearly the same as the one that was thrown out by the court, Mrs. Windsor said in an interview on Little Rock radio station KLAZ-FM, 98.5. But its title is to be the “Limitation On Abortion And Abortion Funding Amendment,” she said.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 2000 CAMDEN - Thomas Forbes, director of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy, was suspended Friday with pay after fire chiefs and firefighters across the state had complained about how the academy was operated and about the alleged abusive tactics Forbes uses when dealing with the firefighting community. “I am scheduled to meet with Dr. Worsley on Thursday,” Forbes said in a lengthy telephone interview Friday. “There is a definite possibility that the outcome will be that I am removed.”
