Arkansas women honored by SEC

Arkansas women’s cross country runner Miranda Walker has been named female athlete of the week by the SEC. Stephanie Brown was named female freshman of the week.

Walker finished second at the UC-Riverside Invitational last week, helping the Razorbacks win the event. Walker ran the 5,000 meters in a career-best 16 minutes, 51.1 seconds. Brown finished fifth in 17:13.7.

Big race for little cars at I-30

The nation’s top mini-sprint drivers will be at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway beginning tonight for the fifth annual Mini-Sprint Nationals. Drivers from 15 states have pre-entered for the event.

Preliminary features will pay $1,000 to win tonight and Friday night, with Saturday night’s finale paying $3,000 to win.

Jason Lair of Del City, Okla., won last year’s event. Osceola’s Travis Senter Jr. won in 2008 and the inaugural race in 2006. Tulsa’s Jerrod Wilson won in 2007.

Grandstand admission tonight and Friday night is $5 for adults and $1 for children aged 6-12, while pit passes are $25. On Saturday night, which will also include the full-sized sprint cars, admission is $15 for adults and $1 for children aged 6-12. Pit passes are $30.

Tech player honored; team earns victory

Arkansas Tech hitter Laura Farney was named offensive player of the week Tuesday by the Gulf South Conference.

Arkansas Tech (13-3) beat Ouachita Baptist (11-1) 25-15, 25-14, 25-15 in its conference opener Tuesday in Russellville. Farney had 12 kills and 11 digs. Arkansas Tech went 6-0 last week, as Farney had a combined 63 kills and 44 digs.

It is the second consecutive week Farney has been named GSC player of the week. She leads the team in kills and is second in digs.

Harding breaks skid

Harding (6-7) beat Southern Arkansas 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 Tuesday in Searcy to end a five-match losing streak.

Reagan Smith led Harding with 13 kills. Freshman hitter Mollie Arnold had 12 kills and 10 digs. Lindsey Wilcox had eight kills for Southern Arkansas.

Harding has won 14 consecutive matches against Southern Arkansas.

SOCCER

Lyon beats Hendrix

Anja Klotzle scored two goals and had one assist Tuesday to lead Lyon College (5-2) to a 5-0 home victory over Hendrix College (1-5).

Lyon has won its past two games by shutout. Goalkeeper Erica Cox has a school-record 14 shutouts.

Katie Marshall, Creeia Nuckols and Linda Miloud also scored for Lyon.

John Brown loses at home

John Brown (3-3) lost to Friends (Kan.) 3-1 Tuesday in Siloam Springs.

Juan Iraola scored in the ninth minute to give John Brown a 1-0 lead, but Friends scored three goals in the second half to earn the victory.

TENNIS

Arkansas player returns as coach

Former Arkansas player Audrey Bordeleau has been hired as an assistant coach at the school, women’s Coach Michael Hegarty said.

Bordeleau played at Arkansas in 2005-2008 and won the SEC women’s title in 2008. She advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament in 2008, the best individual performance in program history.

Arkansas advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.
