Utah fire sparked by National Guard base contained

Fire officials have declared the wildfire that began burning in a Salt Lake City suburb on Sunday to be 100 percent contained.

Fire spokesman Jason Curry says word of the containment came as the last crew came down off the mountains just before 6 p.m. Friday. Curry says some firefighters will monitor the area for hotspots and make sure the flames do not return.

More than 1,600 homes were evacuated because of the fire, which was ignited Sunday by machine gun fire in a National Guard training exercise at Camp Williams.

Three homes were destroyed and a fourth was damaged in the fire.

The U.S. Department of Defense is paying homeowners for losses caused by flames or smoke.
