READING NOOK

— The iconic Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook has been gracing kitchen shelves since 1930 and this year, much loved “Red Plaid” got a top-to-bottom makeover. The Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book, 15th Edition ($29.95, Wiley) includes all the basics and then some, with more than 1,400 recipes, complete with 800-plus photos, packed in a hefty binder - red plaid, of course.

“It’s a total overhaul,” says editor Jan Miller. “Every single recipe is up for scrutiny every single time.” A solid 400 from the 14th edition were spared the chopping block, another 1,000 recipes are new. Even the red plaid was shipped to the redecorator: It’s bigger and bolder.

Meatloaf, you’ll be relieved to know, is still there. Ditto tuna noodle casserole. Red velvet cake, however, got a redo on the frosting, and now it’s “never fail.” Snickerdoodles, too, were churned through the make-it-better department, and they now store for days and days. New features include “Cook Once, Eat Twice” and Make It Mine” with suggestions for customizing classic recipes with new flavors.
