Big catfish bring big money

— Anglers from eight states competed in the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Saturday on the Arkansas River at Pine Bluff, where Mark Farrow of Meredosia, Ill., and Jerry Cline of Springfield, Ill., won $2,500 with five catfish that weighed 85.35 pounds.

Farrow and Cline also took big fish honors and $500 by catchinga 50-pound catfish. They fished downstream from Pine Bluff and caught their fish in depths of 20-30 feet using shad, skipjack, bluegill and mooneye for bait. They caught a total of 10 fish, but weighed in their biggest five.

Finishing second were Daryl Masingale and Jason Masingale of Paragould, who earned $1,250 with five cats that weighed 74.65 pounds. They fished the Pine Bluff pool and used skipjack in 40 feet of water.

Third place and $750 went to Phil King and Tim Haynie of Corinth, Miss. They fished below Terry Lock and Dam to catch five catfish that weighed 64.45 pounds. They used skipjack in 20-30 feet of water.

In addition to fishing for prizes, the anglers also tried to qualify for the Cabela’s King Kat Classic, which will be held Nov. 12-13 on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway at Columbus, Miss.
