— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1910

The paving of West Fourteenth street is being pushed, grading at the extreme west end of the street near the railroad being the program for yesterday. A composition which is known as “Tarvia” will be placed on the street and has been spread from Main street to Center street. The work of spreading the Tarvia will be resumed next Monday.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1960

The Pulaski County Patrons for Better Education were to appear before the Pulaski County (Rural) School Board later today with a request that the rural board place on the December election ballot the north-south district merger proposal which the rural board has rejected. Meyer F. Marks, president of the organization, said he and Dr. Kenneth Jones would ask the rural board “to let people in the rural district vote on the proposal.”

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1985

Union Rescue Mission opened its Family Emergency Center, 3001 Confederate Blvd., Sunday and will start admitting indigent families this week. With 10 bedrooms, the two-story facility will accommodate up to 40 residents, providing free, temporary lodging to the homeless for average stays of seven days. The $300,000 building also has a first-floor bedroom equipped to meet the needs of the disabled.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 2000 FAYETTEVILLE - A meddlesome signal problem that has plagued those who monitor the skyways won’t sideline Razorback Stadium’s giant TV screen during today’s game. By late Friday afternoon, happy officials with the Federal Aviation Administration declared the false emergency distress signal all but gone, save for some background noise. The FAA will continue monitoring the leftover noise, FAA spokesman Jon Clabes said. Another FAA official said the difference between saying the problem was completely resolved and noting the presence of residual noise is a “nuance” for the purists among them.
