A Senate committee has voted down a proposal to put Fayetteville in the 4th Congressional District, but that doesn’t mean the proposal is dead.

The Senate State Agencies Committee turned away the proposal on a voice vote Monday afternoon.

The full Senate with a simple majority vote could extract the bill from the committee so the 35-member chamber could vote on it. But it’s not clear whether there is enough support for the maneuver.

The bill that would put Fayetteville in the 4th District passed the House last week.

It’s a plan that’s been widely criticized by Republicans who claim it’s an attempt to help Democratic candidates.

The General Assembly recessed on Friday after passing the budget, but legislative leaders called lawmakers back to finish work on redistricting this week.

Supporters of the plan say it’s the best way to keep the state’s four districts relatively equal in population.

The House and Senate convened with the sole purpose of completing redistricting.
