Ex-officer who killed wife misses on clemency plea

— The Arkansas Parole Board has recommended against clemency for a former Fort Smith police officer serving life in prison for the slaying of his wife.

The board announced its decision Wednesday, saying 61-year-old Bill Nelson II should remain in the Tucker Unit in southeast Arkansas.

Nelson was convicted of first-degree murder in 1973 for the slaying of Virginia Sue Nelson.

Nelson was estranged from his wife when she was murdered in Fort Smith almost 40 years ago.

The recommended Gov. Mike Beebe deny Nelson’s request for freedom. Nelson has made several other attempts at having his sentence commuted, all of which were unsuccessful.
