Fewer earthquakes recorded in central Arkansas

Residents in central Arkansas are getting a slight break from an unusually high number of earthquakes that have been shaking the region.

Scientists say the number of daily quakes in Greenbrier and Guy has dropped from 22 last Wednesday to two on Tuesday. The Center for Earthquake Research and Information recorded four earthquakes in the area as of early Wednesday afternoon.

The towns have experienced a numerous quakes during the past few weeks leading up to a 4.1 magnitude quake that struck Greenbrier on Feb. 14. Prior to that earthquake, it wasn’t uncommon for scientists to record more than 20 earthquakes a day.

Scientists say earthquake swarms like the one in central Arkansas come in cycles and that this could be a low point.
