Star City holds off Malvern

— The Star City Bulldogs led by as much as 28-18 in their 51-47 victory over the Malvern Leopards on Thursday. But to say they were in control would be a misrepresentation of their 4A-South Region game Thursday at Pulaski Academy in Little Rock.

“Gosh almighty we did everything we could to lose this game,” Star City Coach Joshua Brown said. “But, there at the end, we showed a lot of heart and determination to win this game.”

The Bulldogs (16-11) pushed their lead to 10 midway through the third quarter, but saw Malvern go on a 14-4 run to tie the score at 32-32 going into the fourth quarter.

Malvern (14-8) hit their first two shots in the fourth quarter, but then went cold as the Bulldogs pushed out to a 46-37 lead. Five Star City players scored in the fourth quarter, a fact that wasn’t lost on Brown.

“This was a team effort and a team victory,” Brown said.

Corey Hellums led the way for Star City, finishing with 11 points. Damar Reed finished with 10 for the Bulldogs. Thurman Lea led all players with 16 points for Malvern, while Evan Vaden had 11 and James King 10.
