World Religion Day to be observed Thursday

— The second annual World Religion Day observance will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Faulkner County Library, 1900 Tyler St. in Conway.

A children’s craft activity, an interfaith panel and the opportunity to learn about a variety of religions will be part of the 2011 World Religion Day. The event is co-sponsored by the Baha’is of Pulaski and Faulkner counties.

This year’s panel will feature the following individuals:

• Baha’i Faith — Dan Reimer of North Little Rock, deputy director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center to Prevent Childhood Obesity in Little Rock.

• Buddhism — Dr. Douglas Young of Conway, retired pathologist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, who leads a Vipassana Buddhist mediation practice at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Conway.

• Christianity — The Rev. Teri Daily of Conway, vicar at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Conway.

• Hindu — Dr. Umadevi Garimella of Conway, director of the Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Institute at the University of Central Arkansas.

• Islam — Dr. Rifat Akhter of Conway, a native of Bangladesh and an assistant professor of sociology and director of gender studies at the University of Central Arkansas.

• Judaism — Sam Siegel of Conway, a freshman at Hendrix College who created a Jewish club at Conway High School.

• Unification Church — Bruce Biggin of Little Rock, director of the Ambassadors for Peace Association of Arkansas, an outreach of his church.
