— City officials gathered Tuesday to break ground on a new fire station in west Little Rock.

Mayor Mark Stodola, Fire Chief Gregory Summers and other city leaders turned dirt in the ceremonial groundbreaking at Rahling Road and Taylor Loop.

The new, 8,000-square-foot station is being constructed in part with a $2 million stimulus grant, which the city received in February 2010. .

Stodola said additional city funding was made possible by the recent sales tax increase. It was passed in a Sept. 13 vote.

"I particularly want to thank to the citizens of our city for their recognition that our basic fundamental responsibility as public servants is public safety," Stodola said.

Lance Hines, city director for the area, said the new station will be the "finest in the city" and a "great downpayment on fire safety in west Little Rock."

"We look forward to having you guys just down the street from us," he said.
