— LR wins Arkansas Shine Award

Little Rock won an Arkansas Shine Award this week from the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission for the city’s “outstanding environmental and community improvement efforts.”

Little Rock was one of six recipients across the state awarded as part of the fourth annual Arkansas Shine Awards.

The capital city was recognized for its recent Bike-to-Work Day, neighborhood revitalization efforts and participation in the Great American Cleanup. The school district’s paper recycling program also contributed to the city’s winning.

It was Little Rock’s first time winning the award. Other 2012 recipients included Bentonville, Brookland, Harrison and Nashville. Fayetteville won the Arkansas Shine Superstar Award after winning the shine award for three years in a row.

Food for Fines

Central Arkansas Library System’s annual Food for Fines week starts Dec. 5.

Patrons with overdue books can return materials along with at least one nonperishable food item per book to clear the fine. The program is not for past fine balances.

Food collected during the drive will be donated to Arkansas Rice Depot, which will use the food in its backpack program that gives school children ready-to-eat food.

The library suggests donating granola bars, ravioli, peanut butter, tuna, canned fruit, cereal and pudding cups.

Food for Fines will continue through Dec. 11, with the program available at all library branches.
