LR panel for sales tax seeks applicants

Those interested have until Dec. 1

— Little Rock residents interested in serving on the city’s Citizens Sales Tax Oversight Committee have until Dec. 1 to apply for a spot.

Starting next year, the 12-member committee will have the job of keeping an eye on how the city spends new sales-tax revenue that will start flowing in to city coffers in March.

Little Rock voters last month approved increasing the city’s sales tax from a half-percent to 1.5 percent. The new tax rate will take effect Jan. 1.

The proceeds are earmarked for a variety of construction projects, from road improvements to police stations. Part of the tax also will pay for additional police and firefighters, as well as code enforcement officers and covering increasing costs at City Hall that were pared in recent years as sales-tax collections did not grow as much as anticipated.

Each of Little Rock’s 10 city directors will be responsible for nominating a committee member. Mayor Mark Stodola will appoint two people to lead the committee.

Letters of interest can be mailed to city directors, whose addresses are online at littlerock.org, or to their attention at City Hall, 500 W. Markham St., Room 203, Little Rock, Ark. 72201.

The committee is expected to meet quarterly and the terms will be for four years.
